(2013), motivation to engage with smartphone apps could be divided into different and specific stages of individual attitudes ( Kim et al., 2013 ). ![]() If individuals are not motivated or enough engaged to adopt this kind of technology, then mHealth apps may be completely useless ( Bauer et al., 2014). However, the outcome of this process cannot be separated from some well-known basic psychological concepts, such as motivation and engagement. Mhealth apps seem to offer a new approach to empower individuals into adopting a less passive role in their well-being and actively contribute to their health. Understanding that their customers often possess mixed motivations, retailers design their stores to appeal to a number of these shopping motivations. For example, as we will see below, a trip to IKEA might be motivated by adventure shopping, because a trip to IKEA is a little like going to an amusement park, as well as value shopping, because the do-it-yourself (DIY) self-assembly system is a way of finding very low priced furniture. Any of these motivations might be present in a given consumer at a particular time, and often several play a role. Table 8.1 presents a taxonomy of hedonic motivations for shopping proposed by Arnold and Reynolds (2003). But often-even in the case of utilitarian purchases-various hedonic motivations related to the upper levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are thought to be part of the shopping experience, both in the bricks-and-mortar and online contexts ( Arnold & Reynolds, 2003 To, Liao, & Lin, 2007 Yim, Yoo, Sauer, & Seo, 2014). When the goals are primarily utilitarian, the physical variables above have predominant influence, as well as price and product attributes. Today the reasons for any given foray into the retail marketplace can vary from strictly utilitarian to strictly hedonic, or, as is often the case, a mixture of motivations may be involved. Window shopping became a popular evening activity and visits to large urban department stores were often more about entertainment than commerce, providing women with leisure activities and a sense of luxury. Shoppers were encouraged to linger without pressure to buy in an effort to make a visit to the department store an outing, similar to going to the theater. With the introduction of the urban department store after the 1840s, special efforts were made to attract women shoppers with stimulating displays, in-store restaurants, and lavish bathroom and lounge facilities ( Benson, 1987). In previous eras, women were uncomfortable in many public contexts. Department stores began to cater to the hedonic motivations of customers-primarily women-by creating palaces of consumption that offered a variety of products and services and catered to customers from a wide range of economic classes ( Benson, 1987 Trachtenberg, 2007). With the growth of a large urban middle class, other less urgent motivations became possible, and the modern concept of “shopping” was born ( Bowlby, 2001 ). Prior to the late 19th century, most purchases were simple utilitarian efforts to obtain needed items at an affordable price. Use was measured as a composite index of variety and frequency of six mobile internet applications. Respondent characteristics captured included age, gender, and experience (in months). These items utilised 7-point scales (‘strongly disagree’ to ‘strongly agree’). The original constructs drew on the previous 2003 UTAUT scales, while the three new constructs adapted scales from other researchers.
